Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was a German philosopher know for his atheistic pessimism. I recommend a reading of his essay The Emptiness of Existence as a good explanation of why religious beliefs persist in spite of the overwhelming weight of reason to the contrary. Simply put, fooling oneself into a belief in God is an inviting delusion - a mirage in what for many would be a desert of nihilism. Reading Schopenhauer allows one to appreciate why religion will always pose a lure to the human psyche: http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/s/schopenhauer/arthur/essays/chapter6.html
