All things dull and ugly ... the Lord God made them all

If you enjoy podcasts, check out Pop Philosophy! which is available through iTunes. One of the episodes is a superb essay by John Huss entitled Monty Python and David Hume on Religion which reminded me of the brilliance of the following ditty:

Monty Python's Ode to Creation

All things dull and ugly,
All creatures short and squat,
All things rude and nasty,
The Lord God made the lot

Each little snake that poisons,
Each little wasp that stings,
He made their brutish venom.
He made their horrid wings.

All things sick and cancerous,
All evil great and small,
All things foul and dangerous,
The Lord God made them all.

Each nasty little hornet,
Each beastly little squid.
Who made the spikey urchin?
Who made the sharks? He did!

All things scabbed and ulcerous,
All pox both great and small,
Putrid, foul and gangrenous,
The Lord God made them all.

Amen.

One of the best (and most succinct) discussions I have seen on the logical problem presented to religion by the existence of evil (i.e. it makes it pretty obvious that there is no God) is presented by English philosopher Stephen Law: http://stephenlaw.blogspot.com/2008/12/could-it-be-pretty-obvious-theres-no.html

  1. If Adolf in his final minutes repented his sins and claimed salvation through the Almighty Lord, after having exterminated masses of human beings and tried to take over the World, is he now living a more peaceful existence in Heaven than someone who lived an average life supporting a family and then dies from an illness without repenting his/her sins?

  2. Thats an excellent point i've seen made before many a time CKDC, unfortunately, devout religiots have a non-sensical answer for everything (as you are probably well aware) and would come up with some reasoning as to why repenting wouldn't be enough for hitler.

While i'm here, TAM, you really need to check out the, 'what to do next time mormons come knocking on your door thread'.

Our friend Seth's latest claim is that Al Qaeda is NOT a religious terrorist group. He claims their motivations are mainly political.

I can't quite believe it myself but he says they are motivated by the same things i am - whatever that means.
