Best podcasts

Several visitors to this site have contacted me recently to indicate that they enjoy being being able to subscribe to the Odiogo created podcasts which are available through iTunes. Many of my posts are unsuitable for podcasting because they are brief and/or just involve posting a link to another site such as youtube. However, it is nice to know that my posts are accessible to visually disabled individuals and others who may not have the time to surf the web but can listen to updates on their daily commutes to work or school.

I have become a podcast addict and I really enjoy them on the short walk to work between my home and office. The variety of material available for free through iTunes is staggering. If you do not have an iPod, you are truly living in the dark ages. My view is that this technology will seriously threaten the viability of conventional AM/FM radio.

I thought some of you might be interested to see what The Atheist Missionary regularly listens to (in order of my preference):

1. Dan Carlin's Hardcore History

2. Philosophy Bites (by Nigel Warburton and David Edmonds)

3. The History of Rome (by Mike Duncan)

4. Point of Inquiry (with D.J. Grothe)

5. Common Sense with Dan Carlin

6. Alan Watts podcast (recordings preserved by the Electronic University)

7. The Fan 590 with Bob McCown (Toronto sports talk radio)

8. ESPN: Football Today (by Jeremy Green and Jay Soderburg aka pod-vader)

9. 60 Second Science (by Scientific American)

10. Philosophy: the Classics (by Nigel Warburton)

11. The Philosophy Podcast (by learnoutloud.com)

12. Real Time with Bill Maher

13. The Howard Simon Show (Buffalo sports talk radio)

I am always interested to hear about other podcasts which my visitors find informative and/or entertaining.

  1. I have listened to Hardcore History a few times and find it very interesting. What I like most about it is the energy in which the material is discussed - it is not every day that you come across such enthusiasm about history!

I will check out that Real Time with Bill Maher as I find his commentary funny and surprisingly informative.

What can I say about Fan 590 - truly the best sports talk in Canada in my opinion. Too bad Toronto teams are so abysmal for the most part.

  2. I notice you don't have the Atheist Experience podcast listed there, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I assume you have heard of it, but possibly not. It's a live call in TV show put on by the Atheist Community of Austin, and they discuss and debate all sorts of stuff. Some of the arguments with theists are top notch education/entertainment! Check it out if you get the chance.

  4. Bill Maher is a funny guy, I must admit. However, he believes in some very anti-scientific garbage, and I can never take him as anything more than a comedian.
