The purpose of this website/blog is to inform atheists and engage theists in reasoned debate. Posts cover a variety of topics including skepticism, humanism, philosophy and critical analysis of religious belief systems. "atheists do not require the carrot of heaven or threat of eternal damnation to lead morally upstanding lives."
ReplyDeleteThe question that invites of course is, so why don't you lead a morally upstanding life? You don't even live up to your own code of ethics. If you don't need God to be a nice person, then why aren't you a nice person?
Of course you set the bar high for others while setting it low for yourself; that's the freedom that comes with relative or selective morality. I understand that. Yet judging others by their actions while judging yourself by your intensions doesn't seem particularly moral to me, nor to your Judge.
Makarios, thanks for dropping by. Your question and blog inspired this post: http://www.atheistmissionary.com/2009/05/who-doesnt-atheist-missionary-lead.htmlThe only bar I set is imploring others to use reason and to reject delusions.
ReplyDelete[Warning - blasphemy alert. Thank Zeus I live in Canada] Your Judge can kiss my ass. I don't want any part of His tyrranical kingdom. As Christopher Hitchens has written: What is a totalitarian system if not one where the abject glorification of the perfect leader is matched by the surrender of all privacy and individuality, especially in matters sexual, and in denunciation and punishment - "for their own good" - of those who transgress?
I must have missed something, Makarios, but why do you conclude that AM does not live a morally upstanding life? Because he is an atheist? Gimme a break.
