
Regular visitors to this site are familiar with the fact that I think English philosopher Stephen Law is one of the brightest proponents of the force of reason against the irrationality of religion. Here is a great example of why: http://stephenlaw.blogspot.com/2007/03/god-of-eth.html



Law's article attempts to show that an argument for an all-powerful all-evil god is absurd, and therefore and argument for an all-powerful all-good god is also absurd. The problem is that good and evil are not merely opposite concepts. Good is a positive concept, and evil is the absence of good. You need "good" in order to define "evil," it doesn't work the other way around.
ReplyDeleteHe's right that some arguments for the existence of God just show that he exists, but don't tell us much more about him. I think the reason most theists believe God to be all-good is based on experience - most people experience God to be good.
