Here I am without the grace of God

The Atheist Missionary is working hard so he can play on the weekend. Tough day at the office .... I just need to remember that I am handsomely compensated and could be just as easily digging ditches (sometimes I wish I was). Like they say: "there go I but for the grace of God". What kind of saying is that anyway? Nice guy that God - he damned some other person to misfortune while you are, at least comparatively, fortunate. It's an accidental testament to atheism every time it's spoken.

I hope you all enjoy this lovely picture by Owen Sound, Ontario painter Charles Meanwell.

  1. Nice art, wherever Owen Sound is.

You recently posted a piece about the role of God and biblical references as war propaganda. It made me think back to former Presidents. Perhaps surprisingly to some (because of his party), Ronald Reagan rarely injected God or religion into his speeches or his advertising. Remember the famous "Bear in the Woods" television ad - that was built entirely on fear of the unknown - the Soviet Union. Remember the famous "tear down this wall" speech - again, fairly detached from religious connotations. Reagan was more prone to referencing God in times of tragedy, like when the Challenger exploded and Reagan referred to the astronauts "touching the face of God".

My point is simply that effective speech-writing and political propaganda, even in times of war, does not have to inject notions of God or religion. In fact, if your primary argument is that your actions have the support of God as their justification, then you likely have little justification in the first place.

Just my two cents this Thursday morning.
