Today's Toronto Star has an excellent article that explains the recent "Oprah-fication" of medicine which I would argue is similar to the "Oprah-fication" of spirituality. Wayne State University surgical oncologist David Gorski writes: The anti-vaccine movement is but one of the most visible components of a much deeper problem in our public discourse, a problem that values feelings and personal experience over evidence, compelling stories and anecdotes over science.
This is why I "religiously" buy the Sunday paper: http://www.thestar.com/Insight/article/646830

Oprah is a menace. The Texas cattle farmers had her right where they wanted her before they got scared off by the most powerful conglomerate in North American celebrity.
ReplyDeleteDavid Letterman could take her any day.
AM,
ReplyDeletethis article originally appeared as a blog post on www.sciencebasemedicine.org. couldn't recommend more highly that you check in regularly on that site. dr. gorski & dr. harriet hall are one of the best line of defense the US has against the [seemingly] limitless onslaught of woo down here.
in any case, i'd like to invite you to peruse & comment on my own site -- a decidedly revisionist read of AA & the 12X12 [medical] industry. your blog is always thought provoking & makes for great reading.
thanks,
