Perhaps time will heal us

Is it too much to hope that evolution will eradicate the propensity to accept irrational religious beliefs in much the same way as it appears redheads might be going the way of the dodo within the next 100 years? http://www.thestar.com/living/article/683205

  1. Unfortunately (well, depending on belief), according to a JW friend of mine, when atheists have their domination of the world, that's a further sign that we are closer to the apocolypse. (giggle)

  2. Far as I've researched elsewhere, the 'redheads are going extinct' is pretty much an urban myth. So while we can hope that we'll evolve away from this need for the supernatural, I don't have much hope.

  3. I think your time frame is too long. My own guess would be about 50 years. I read (somewhere) that in the last 15 years the rate of the "non-religious" in the US has gone from 7.5% to 15%. With all the recent pro-atheism books out and the new chicness of atheism, I see this trend accelerating. Anyone who seriously questions god is very likely to read the new literature which is very convincing. Once you approach both sides with an open mind there is no going back (try reading mere christianity for a good laugh).
Church is pretty boring, pedantic, and patronizing. Most people don't want to listen to an hour or two of that stuff (plus bad music) if the entire basis has been revealed as hogwash.

  4. I agree with Lxndr, this bogus theory is based on a misunderstanding of how recessive genes work. There was a similar theory about blondes going extinct a while ago, read about it on Snopes.

  5. Redheads going extinct? I might start repenting after all so at least I can satisfy some childish dreams in Heaven!

  6. Can I wonder outloud if evolution would select against homosexuality. Aren’t homosexuals less successful reproductively?

I have the feeling that the most successful are the Catholics and the Muslims; won’t our future be _more_ dogmatic?
