There is only one way that anybody will give a rat's ass about climate change, except for those who already champion the cause.
ReplyDeleteThey need a bunch of big-shots on tv from various walks of life (from politics to sports to movies to books, etc.) who will take turns speaking directly into the camera and guaranteeing that any viewer who has a child will see the ravages of climate change on that child's health and lifestyle.
Yes, I know, not everyone has a child; who cares - that is the best way to frame the argument. In other words, make it specific; make it personal; make it celebrity; put it on tv. These environmental summits which talk about glacier melting in some distant place which will cause some unspecified problem at some unspecified time in the future miss the boat completely. The whole Albert Gore phenomenon is way too academic. Joe Montana saying to a die-hard NFL football fan that "Your daughter WILL have asthma if she goes outside as much as you did when you were a child unless you do x" - that is the only way to get the message through. People respond to deadlines and health crises for their kids; and people listen to those they respect whether a famous author, nobel prize winning economist or the Iron Chef.
The hardcore religious don't care about climate change since Jesus is coming within the next few years or so. Then everything will be alright since Christ will put everything back in order. So go right ahead and toss that cigarette butt on the ground. Jesus will clean it up!
ReplyDeleteI fear this reflects more the telegraph newspaper than the speech itself. Compare the coverage of teh same event from the independent. www.independent.co.uk/news/science/fundimentalism-will-damage-society-says-top-scientist-1782930.html
