I would be interested to know if Christians take offense to this exhibit (http://timescolumns.typepad.com/gledhill/2009/10/crucified-ape-unveiled-in-london.html) and, if so, why. In my opinion, displaying a crucified ape hammers home mankind's inhumane treatment of animals and our specieism in a disarming manner.
Great art captures the attention and makes one reflect. This is great art.

"hammers home" - pun intended?
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that for most christians the cross is something sacred, and they could take offense of it being used this way. Besides the exhibit is inside a chuch (i think)
ReplyDeleteTo Eva: the cross isn't even originally a symbol of Christianity. It's just another thing they stole from the pagans... and we all know how the Xtians feels about the pagans.
ReplyDeleteHell, the fucking thing was a TORTURE device. There shouldn't be anything sacred about that.
Eva, I was also curious as to how the artists managed to secure that exhibition location. Apparently, the Holy Trinity Church is no longer used as a church.
ReplyDeleteThe last sentence of your article may have taken the words right out of the mouths of Vatican spokesmen in justification of the Palace's artful extravagance...be careful.
ReplyDeleteI know that the cross is not originally christian, but a lot of people feel that it is very important: for them it means "holy". And most people act in one way or another depending on how they feel, reality is less important than belief or feelings in order to understand behaviour
