- Care about truth.
- Care about grammar.
- Care about eloquence in speaking.
- Develop refined tastes in everything you can
- Develop masterful BS detector.
- Speak truths that no one else will, but which need to be heard.
- Never flatter.
- Don't sell character for success.
- Be skeptical of whatever "the herd" likes.
- Do not watch TV. In fact, turn them off whenever possible.
- Lament stupidity inanity, and insanity. They are everywhere
I can't disagree with any of this. I'm proud to call myself a curmudgeon.

I would not want to be taken as suggesting that Groothuis exemplifies the virtues he espouses.
